Invitation for Submissions
about September 11, 2001

As the first anniversary of September 11, 2001 approaches, many of us are stopping to reflect on what it means for us and for our world. At BIDMCtoday we would like to share your thoughts about this day that changed us all and the year that has followed. Please submit your letters, stories, poems, digital photos, or anything else that you would like to share with your coworkers about September 11, in 150 words or less, to vgoldste@caregroup.harvard.edu by August 21. We will publish a representative sample of your responses in the September online version of BIDMCtoday.

New Web Site Provides Monthly Journal Publications of BIDMC staff

Working with Margo Coletti, director of medical libraries, Jay Daly, medical librarian, and Stephen Berry, director of academic computing, the Carl J. Shapiro Institute has added to its website a monthly-updated listing of journal publications by BIDMC faculty. Drawing from Current Contents and PubMed, the new program,
http://research.caregroup.org/Data/Pubs.asp, includes abstracts, where available, as well as information about authorship and information to access the specific publication.

The site is identified as "BIDMC research publications" at the bottom of the Carl J. Shapiro Institute page, http://research.caregroup.org/Institute. It will help research scientists and other faculty at BIDMC to gain broader appreciation of the vast and varied research conducted within the institution, and should also help individuals outside the institution -- from potential house staff candidates to individuals being recruited to BIDMC -- who may be interested in research or clinical opportunities at BIDMC to understand more fully the extent and sophistication of our research programs.

Joseph M. Smith Community Health Center Recognized for Dental Services

The Joseph M. Smith Community Health Center was named "Best Dental Services" in the 2002 Allston-Brighton TAB Readers' Choice Awards. The health center offers a full range of dental services for patients of all ages. Hours are Mon., Wed. and Fri., 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tues. and Thurs., 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sat., 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Information/appointment scheduling: 617-783-0500

Make the Grade This Fall with Tuition Reimbursement

If you are a benefits-eligible employee who has worked at BIDMC for at least one year and are thinking of taking a course, don't forget about your tuition reimbursement benefit. Eligible full-time employees are entitled to $1,000 tuition reimbursement per calendar year ($500 for part-time employees). You must submit your completed application for reimbursement at least three weeks before the course starts, and the course must be job-related. To get full details, print out an application from the BIDMC Web portal under Human Resources, Forms, or pick up an application from the information racks in the Kirstein 2 lobby or Human Resources in Kennedy 1.
Information: Human Resources at (63)2-9400.

South Cove Receives Grant

South Cove Community Health Center received a two-year "330 expansion grant" from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The first year provides $283,333, and the second $425,000, which will enable South Cove to improve patient access to the growing Asian community in Quincy and surrounding areas. This grant was one of 131 awarded nationally by HHS to increase the number of people served by community health centers from the current 11 million to more than 16 million by 2006.

Wanted:
Walkers for the 2002 Boston Heart Walk!

Walkers are needed! Everyone at BIDMC is invited to take part in the 2002 American Heart Walk on Sat., Sept. 14, 2002. This fun, non-competitive walk of one, three or 6.2 miles helps raise money to fund cardiovascular and stroke research and education. The event is a great way to support the American Heart Association (AHA), which grants BIDMC nearly four million dollars for cardiovascular research.

You can join one of the many BIDMC Walk Teams that have formed, or sign up separately as a BIDMC walker. Either way, invite your family and friends to join you!

As a walker, you will raise money for heart disease research and education by asking for donations from friends, family, co-workers and business associates. The BIDMC walker with the highest dollars collected will win two pre-season Celtics tickets--and there are a variety of other prizes offered by the AHA.

To join one of the BIDMC Walk Teams, contact a team captain listed on the BIDMC portal at http://www.bidmc.harvard.edu/events/2002heartwalk-BIDMC.asp. Or, call Deb Schoenthaler at 617-754-8774. To sign up separately, go to http://www.kintera.org/faf/home/default.asp?ievent=4398&lis=0 or click on the "register online" link at http://www.bidmc.harvard.edu/events/2002heartwalk-BIDMC.asp.

Epstein Named COO

BIDMC President and CEO Paul Levy has announced that Michael Epstein, M.D., will join BIDMC as its chief operating officer.

“We are exceptionally pleased to have him on board,” Levy said of Epstein, who served briefly as acting COO before taking on the role. “In a short time, our entire team recognized his leadership, operational expertise and experience in Boston medicine as tremendous assets.”
Epstein has led a distinguished career in academic medicine as a clinician, researcher and administrator. At Children’s Hospital, his roles included vice president for medical affairs, executive vice president, COO and chief medical officer. Epstein held joint appointments as division chief of neonatology at Children’s and chair of the Beth Israel department of neonatology. He is an associate professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School (HMS) with numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals.

“This is a great opportunity to work with great people and to make a difference,” says Epstein, who emphasizes information-sharing and open discussion.

New Chair, Chief Appointed

Mary Anne Badaracco, M.D., has been appointed chair of BIDMC’s department of psychiatry following her tenure as acting chief of the department. She also has been appointed associate professor at HMS. Badaracco is recognized not only for her leadership of the psychiatry service, but for her work as an advocate for the mental health needs of patients at BIDMC and in the community. Badaracco joined New England Deaconess Hospital in 1993 as director of inpatient psychiatry, after holding many leadership roles at Massachusetts Mental Health Center. She is chairman of the Inpatient Psychiatry Training Committee of the Harvard Longwood Psychiatry Training Program, and the recipient of honors including the Outstanding Psychiatrist Award for Clinical Psychiatry from the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society.

Michael Rosenblatt, M.D., will return to the department of medicine in the new position of chief of the division of bone and mineral research, following a six-month sabbatical at the Whitehead Institute of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Children’s Hospital. A world-renowned authority on osteoporosis, calcium metabolism and parathyroid hormone action, Rosenblatt and his colleagues will study the mechanisms by which malignant tumors metastasize to bony tissue. Rosenblatt’s previous BIDMC positions include Harvard faculty dean for academic programs and president. He is the George R. Minot Professor of Medicine at HMS.

Hearing Held on Deaconess-Glover Affiliation

BIDMC’s new relationship with Deaconess-Glover Hospital received solid community support at its Department of Public Health regulatory hearing on June 24. Leadership from both hospitals and from community agencies spoke in favor of the new affiliation. Also presented to the Public Health Council on July 23, the affiliation will facilitate collaborative clinical integration initiatives between the two institutions, initially in the areas of cardiology, surgery, radiology and a hospitalist program at Deaconess-Glover.

CareGroup Named "Most Wired"

CareGroup Healthcare Systems has been named one of the nation's "Most Wired" hospital and health systems in the fourth annual survey and benchmarking study of technically savvy hospitals conducted by Hospitals & Health Networks, the journal of the American Hospital Association.

The survey and benchmarking study measures the nation's health care systems on their use of Internet technologies to connect with patients, physicians and nurses, payors, health plans and employees. This is the first time CareGroup has been named to the list.

"At CareGroup, we provide leading edge technology solutions that improve patient care, streamline workflow and enhance our financial stability," said John Halamka, M.D., CareGroup's chief medical information officer. "It is an honor to be awarded the 'Most Wired' award and I congratulate the hardworking staff of IS who earned it."

CareGroup has long been a national leader in using Internet technology. PatientSite - a secure interactive Web site that gives patients easy access to their medical records and enables them to communicate with their physicians via the Internet - debuted in April 2000 and has attracted 8,000 patients and 110 clinicians. eTicket, an electronic-based billing system for physicians at BIDMC unveiled earlier this year, is improving accuracy and lightening doctors' administrative workloads.
