As the first anniversary of September 11, 2001 approaches,
many of us are stopping to reflect on what it means for us and for our
world. At BIDMCtoday we would like to share your thoughts about this day
that changed us all and the year that has followed. Please submit your
letters, stories, poems, digital photos, or anything else that you would
like to share with your coworkers about September 11, in 150 words or
less, to vgoldste@caregroup.harvard.edu
by August 21. We will publish a representative sample of your responses
in the September online version of BIDMCtoday. Working with Margo Coletti, director of medical libraries,
Jay Daly, medical librarian, and Stephen Berry, director of academic computing,
the Carl J. Shapiro Institute has added to its website a monthly-updated
listing of journal publications by BIDMC faculty. Drawing from Current
Contents and PubMed, the new program, The Joseph M. Smith Community Health Center was named
"Best Dental Services" in the 2002 Allston-Brighton TAB Readers'
Choice Awards. The health center offers a full range of dental services
for patients of all ages. Hours are Mon., Wed. and Fri., 8:30 a.m. to
5 p.m.; Tues. and Thurs., 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sat., 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Information/appointment scheduling: 617-783-0500 If you are a benefits-eligible employee who has worked

part-time employees). You must submit your completed application for reimbursement
at least three weeks before the course starts, and the course must be

1. South Cove Community Health Center received a two-year
"330 expansion grant" from the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services. The first year provides $283,333, and the second $425,000,
which will enable South Cove to improve patient access to the growing
Asian community in Quincy and surrounding areas. This grant was one of
131 awarded nationally by HHS to increase the number of people served
by community health centers from the current 11 million to more than 16
million by 2006. Walkers are needed! Everyone at BIDMC is invited to take part in the 2002 American Heart Walk on Sat., Sept. 14, 2002. This fun, non-competitive walk of one, three or 6.2 miles helps raise money to fund cardiovascular and stroke research and education. The event is a great way to support the American Heart Association (AHA), which grants BIDMC nearly four million dollars for cardiovascular research. You can join one of the many BIDMC Walk Teams that have formed, or sign up separately as a BIDMC walker. Either way, invite your family and friends to join you! As a walker, you will raise money for heart disease research and education by asking for donations from friends, family, co-workers and business associates. The BIDMC walker with the highest dollars collected will win two pre-season Celtics tickets--and there are a variety of other prizes offered by the AHA. To join one of the BIDMC Walk Teams, contact a team
captain listed on the BIDMC portal at http://www.bidmc.harvard.edu/events/2002heartwalk-BIDMC.asp.
Or, call Deb Schoenthaler at 617-754-8774. To sign up separately, go to

The survey and benchmarking study measures the nation's health care systems on their use of Internet technologies to connect with patients, physicians and nurses, payors, health plans and employees. This is the first time CareGroup has been named to the list. "At CareGroup, we provide leading edge technology solutions that improve patient care, streamline workflow and enhance our financial stability," said John Halamka, M.D., CareGroup's chief medical information officer. "It is an honor to be awarded the 'Most Wired' award and I congratulate the hardworking staff of IS who earned it." CareGroup has long been a national leader in using Internet technology. PatientSite - a secure interactive Web site that gives patients easy access to their medical records and enables them to communicate with their physicians via the Internet - debuted in April 2000 and has attracted 8,000 patients and 110 clinicians. eTicket, an electronic-based billing system for physicians at BIDMC unveiled earlier this year, is improving accuracy and lightening doctors' administrative workloads. |
