Fischer, M.D., surgery, was unanimously elected director of the James IV Association of Surgeons at its annual meeting of members. The Association disseminates information on developments in the science and methods of surgery, and seeks to improve surgery through an international exchange of professors and surgeons. Odile D. Peroni, Ph.D., endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism, was BIDMC’s 2002 recipient of the First Annual Pfizer Scholars in Endocrinology Award Program. The division received $1,500 in honor of Peroni’s research in endocrinology. Barbara B. Kahn, M.D., chief of the division, nominated Peroni for outstanding contributions to understanding the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes. DeWayne Pursley, M.D., neonatology, received a Dean’s Community Service Award from Harvard Medical School for his outstanding personal efforts in serving his community. The award includes a $1,000 donation to programs represented by Pursley, who serves on the Board of Directors for the March of Dimes Foundation and the West Suburban YMCA, works with the Family Van Compassionate Care for Boston Families program, and coaches youth sports.
