MICU B Opens

BIDMC’s newest intensive care unit, MICU B, opened June 18. The addition of this eight-bed unit helps ensure beds will be available for the increasing number of critical care patients at BIDMC.

“This opening is a hallmark event,” says Dianne Anderson, vice president of patient care services. “MICU B is an important part of our plans to meet the needs of critical care patients and their families into the future.”

Anderson praises nurses and physicians from the ICUs and post-anesthesia care unit, as well as respiratory and physical therapists, pharmacists, facilities staff and others, for their flexibility and hard work on behalf of MICU B.

Adds J. Woodrow Weiss, M.D., medical director of BIDMC medical intensive care units, “There’s a chronic shortage of ICU beds in this city. Our ability to open this unit is a testament to our nurses.”

Beth Israel Deaconess Welcomes Deaconess-Glover Into the Fold

Current Plan for BIDMC Services at Deaconess-Glover Hospital

Deaconess-Glover Hospital in Needham and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center are forming closer ties, allowing physicians at both hospitals to develop and expand clinical programs at Glover. The new affiliation, expected to become official this August following approval by the Department of Public Health, builds upon an ongoing relationship in which doctors at BIDMC have provided care in the Glover ED and in its OB/GYN, oncology and cardiology programs for several years.

“BIDMC’s new collaboration with Glover is a major — and very positive — development,” says BIDMC President and CEO Paul Levy. “A fundamental aspect of our recovery plan is to build volume through strategic alliances. This is one of them.”

Highlights of Glover’s direct affiliation with BIDMC will include:

Clinical Enhancement: Specialists at BIDMC will see patients at Glover, broadening Glover cardiology, surgery and hospitalist services and continuing existing programs (see chart, below). A new radiology chief will be recruited to head the Glover radiology department and undertake research at BIDMC. Plans also are underway to electronically link the hospitals so that physicians at BIDMC can view test results from Glover. “This will profoundly elevate and expand our services,” says Glover’s President and CEO John Dalton. “Our relationship with BIDMC will give patients in Needham and surrounding communities access to leading-edge care closer to home.”

New Oversight: BIDMC will replace CareGroup as Glover's parent corporation, taking on responsibilities for oversight, including adding three new representatives to Glover’s Board, which will remain in place. While Glover will change its name to reflect the new relationship, it will retain a separate corporate identity. As president and CEO, Dalton will continue to oversee daily operations and quality of care.

The affiliation is expected to strengthen Glover’s position in the market, and to enhance the seamless flow of patients from Glover to BIDMC if tertiary care is needed. New jointly appointed physicians will join several Glover departments.

Both hospitals’ boards and staff proudly support the new relationship.

“Collaborating with Glover physicians in their ED has been a wonderful experience,” says Richard Wolfe, M.D., chief of emergency medicine at BIDMC. “Our joint efforts can be a model for other BIDMC and Glover services as they build their mutual programs.”
