In Memoriam...
It is with great sadness that we report the recent deaths of three members
of the BIDMC family:
William C. Quist, M.D., Ph.D., was a friend, colleague
and long-time member of the pathology department. At the time of his death,
Dr. Quist was a member of the pathology staff, director of the Autopsy
Service and director of the Vascular Surgery Research Laboratory. A renowned
surgical and autopsy pathologist, Dr. Quist was nationally recognized
for contributions in cardiovascular devices and technology. His research
with long-time mentor Frank LoGerfo, M.D., chief of vascular surgery,
focused on improving the survival of prosthetic arterial grafts. Dr. Quist
also was an outstanding teacher who taught for many years in the Harvard
MIT Pathology course, of which he became associate director. He conceived,
created and directed the William J. von Liebig Summer Student Research
Training Program at Harvard Medical School, and won accolades from students
in the Harvard New Pathway and Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences
and Technology (HST). He also received the Irving M. London Award for
Excellence in Teaching in 1999, and recently delivered the Peter S. Ciano
M.D. Memorial Lecture at Pathology Grand Rounds. Donations in Dr. Quist’s
memory may be made to the HST program. Send a check payable to “HST
– MIT –Harvard” to HST Building E25-519, Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, 77 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, MA 02139.
Kenneth "Mike" Safe, Jr., was a volunteer leader of the
New England Deaconess Medical Center since 1973, and a member of the BIDMC
Board of Overseers. Mr. Safe served in the United States Army and enjoyed
sailing and golf. A resident of Duxbury, Mr. Safe was the managing partner
of the investment firm Welch and Forbes. He leaves his wife, Elizabeth;
children, Hope Nuland, Elizabeth Bitting, Edith Devnew, Thorn Safe, and
the late Kenneth Safe III; and 11 grandchildren. Our heartfelt sympathy
goes out to his family and friends.
Dr. Bradley E. Copeland was a member of the staff of both the New
England Deaconess and Baptist Hospitals for 30 years. He served as Chief
of Pathology at both institutions and was Chief of Staff at the Baptist.
In cooperation with Northeastern University, Dr.Copeland pioneered a School
of Medical Technology at New England Deaconess, where many of BIDMC's
current medical technologists completed their training. Dr. Copeland moved
to Cincinnati in 1979 when he joined the staff of the Veterans Administration
Hospital Medical Center as Chief of Pathology, and was on the faculty
of the University of Cincinnati Medical School, where he was Professor
Emeritus at the time of his death. He also was the Chairman of the Commission
on World Standards and was known as an international leader in quality
control. Our condolences go out to Dr. Copeland's wife, Jacqueline, his
sister, Jean, and his children and grandchildren.
