S. Ananth Karumanchi, M.D., medicine/renal, appeared in a Newsday article regarding new developments in predicting preeclampsia, a life-threatening condition that occurs in about one of every 20 pregnancies. Karumanchi was lead researcher in a study that was able to detect early-on abnormal levels of particular substances believed to bring about preeclampsia. Related articles appeared in USA Today, The L.A. Times, The Washington Post and WebMD Medical News.

Duane Pinto, M.D., cardiology, wrote an article for The Boston Globe that dealt with how cold temperatures adversely impact the heart, and steps people should take to avoid problems.

Steven Freedman, M.D., Ph.D, gastroenterology, discussed recent findings that show people with cystic fibrosis suffer from an imbalance of fatty acids, suggesting new treatments targeting fatty acid production might one day offer help. Articles covering the topic appeared in The Boston Globe, HealthCentral.com, Scripps Howard New Service, BBC News, The Worcester Telegram & Gazette and Ivanhoe's Medical Breakthroughs.

Boston Magazine published its list of best "up-and-coming doctors" in 20 specialties. The honor was bestowed upon on the following BIDMC doctors: Lara Kelley, M.D., dermatology, Anthony Hollenberg, M.D., endocrinology, and Michael Malone, M.D., urology

Alvaro Pascual-Leone, M.D., neurology, was interviewed by U.S. News & World Report for an article on magnetism and the brain. Pascual-Leone discussed transcranial magnetic stimulation, noting,"The main effect is not because of the exposure to the actual magnetic field but because of the way that a rapidly changing magnetic field pulse may be generating a current."

George Blackburn, M.D., Ph.D, general surgery, was interviewed by The Boston Globe for an article on how fatty acid imbalance can have an adverse impact on health.

Joanne Marqusee, vice president of operations, appeared in a Boston Business Journal article about hospital's efforts to attain financial health. Detailed was a soft drink exclusive Marqusee arranged with Coke which ended up saving BIDMC $30,000 annually.

Claire Donohue, R.N., operating room, was featured in an article in The Salem, N.H., Observer about her travels abroad to treat children in impoverished areas of the world. Students from Pelham High School have made such materials as elbow restraints to support Donohue's efforts.

Elvira Lang, M.D., radiology, appeared on the "CBS Sunday Morning Show" With Charles Osgood, for a story dealing with hypnotism and its use in surgery.

Douglas Hanto, M.D., chief of transplantation, was interviewed by The Boston Globe for an article about increased numbers of AIDS patients getting organ transplants. BIDMC has joined other transplant centers for a five-year study to examine what happens when patients infected with the virus receive new kidneys and livers.
