Minimally Invasive Surgery Exhibit
Museum of Science, Boston
The Blue Wing and the first and
second floors of the Green Wing
Free for all Boston hospital staff
with ID badges and their families

BIDMC staff members and their families are invited to experience firsthand what it's like to perform minimally invasive surgery at a fun, free, educational open house.

At 6:30 p.m., BIDMC's own Dan Jones, M.D., will speak on "Simulation and Virtual Reality: A New Paradigm for Training Surgeons" with Steve Schwaitzberg, M.D., New England Medical Center.

Come visit the OR, ask questions, and then explore the museum. This will be an ideal introduction to the museum for those who have never visited and a great opportunity to enjoy it for anyone who already knows it. This event will allow hospital staff to share a very intriguing aspect of their workplaces with friends and family.

Food will be available for purchase at the museum's Galaxy Cafes and a cash bar service in the Blue Wing will also be provided. The open house is made possible by educational grants from Stryker and Auto Suture.

Parking in the museum garage is $5 per car. Please remember your hospital ID for admittance.

The open house is part of the MIS operating room on display from Friday, Sept. 17 through Sunday, Sept. 26, at the Museum of Science. Jones will be a guest speaker for the exhibit again at 1:30 on Sunday, Sept. 26 on "Obesity Surgery in America: A Minimally Invasive Approach to a National Epidemic."

Stryker, a leading manufacturer of specialized surgical equipment, is bringing a complete i-Suite (TM) operating room to the museum so visitors can walk inside a real operating room and experience first-hand something that they'd otherwise probably never be able to see. Auto Suture will provide state-of-the-art surgical instruments used in minimally-invasive surgery, providing further opportunities for museum visitors to understand hands-on the skills and tools used at leading hospitals here in the Boston area.

Sat., Sept. 18, 6:30 pm
Red Sox Mind/Body Fund-Raiser
John W. Henry, principal owner of the Boston Red Sox, will be the honored guest at a Mind/Body Medical Institute (M/BMI) benefit dinner to be held at the Westin Hotel, Copley Square. Henry is an M/BMI trustee and a longtime supporter of the work of M/BMI President Herbert Benson, M.D., a staff physician at BIDMC, the official hospital of the Boston Red Sox. The evening will also feature an appearance by Mayor Tom Menino, jazz by Rebecca Parris and a live auction of sought-after Red Sox tickets for the 2005 season, including Green Monster seats. Contact Michele Chausse at 617 991-0102 x213 or at mchausse@bidmc.harvard.edu for more information.
