BIDMC Tops in Patient Care Survey

stars
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham continue to receive rave reviews from patients and employees. Most recently the two earned gold stars in a national survey of patient care conducted by Professional Research Consultants, Inc., (PRC), the independent vendor for BIDMC’s patient satisfaction survey. PRC ranked BIDMC and BID-Needham against several hundred hospitals nationwide. The results:

Several inpatient and outpatient units ranked among the top 10 percent in the country. BIDMC’s cancer/oncology program on Feldberg 7 received PRC’s highest honor by being named Overall Top Performer in that category. Notably, BIDMC’s program was one of only three oncology programs nationwide to receive a Five Star Award, out of 74 oncology programs surveyed.

BIDMC’s outpatient surgery department was named Top Performer for pre-surgical information and for overall quality of doctor care.

Other areas at BIDMC also earned Five Star Awards, ranking them among the top 10 percent nationwide:

  • l Inpatient Care
  • l Farr 3 – Cardiology/Telemetry
  • l Farr 5 – Neurology Medicine
  • l Farr 7 – Medical/Surgical
  • l Farr 10 – Renal/Liver

BID-Needham’s emergency department received a Five Star Award, and its inpatient unit earned a Four Star Award. BIDMC’s executive leadership received a Four Star Employee Perception Award.

Salute to BIDMC Nurses!

A standing-room-only crowd at the Shapiro Clinical Center lobby on May 12 watched as nearly $100,000 in scholarships was presented to 21 nurses and nurses-in-training, and numerous others were honored at BIDMC’s Annual Nursing Awards Ceremony.

Physicians and chiefs, staff, board members, donors and family members were there for one purpose – to honor nurses.

Outgoing Board Chairman Carl Sloane noted that he cherished receiving inspiring letters about BIDMC’s nursing staff. “Please know that no one has come to love or respect you more than I do,” he said. Sloane also pointed out that incoming Chair Lois Silverman will be not only the first woman to hold that position, but also the first nurse.

President and CEO Paul Levy, Chief Operating Officer Michael Epstein, MD, and Senior Vice President of Clinical Operations Dianne Anderson, RN, MS, all noted a long list of achievements by nursing staff over the past year: opening new units, leading-edge improvement projects, a perfect JCAHO score, the iShift roll-out, staffing Fenway Park first aid, international service, and more.

A moving moment came when Levy presented the first Alexander and Brenda Tanger Nursing Scholarship, established last year to honor nurse Maggie Fermental, RN, then recovering from a fall-related stroke. Fermental is back at work on Farr 5 and came to the ceremony.
