Staying Safe at Work

(L-r) BIDMC Senior Vice President of Ambulatory and Emergency Services Jayne Carvelli-Sheehan, Bithell-Taylor and Director of Ambulatory Operations Kelly Orlando are keeping BIDMC employees safe on the job.

BIDMC’s Employee Occupational Health Service (EOHS) is finding even better ways to ensure safety on the job and speed injured staff members’ return to work.

The EOHS’ Employee Loss Prevention Program (ELPP) collaborates with BIDMC’s health and safety departments to eliminate hazards that might lead to workplace accidents and exposure incidents. The EOHS has also partnered with Cannon Cochran Management Services, Inc., to better manage workplace injuries that do occur.

“We work closely with the injured employee’s assigned nurse case manager to provide the employee with access to the appropriate medical care and rehabilitation, and, if needed, transitional duty positions until the employee can return full time to his or her regular department,” says EOHS Manager Karen Bithell-Taylor, RN, BIDMC’s new workers compensation coordinator.

In FY06 EOHS plans to select one department for a pilot safety project. EOHS staff will identify potential causes of repeat accidents within that department and assist with procedural or equipment changes to prevent future occurrences.

“We will be reviewing our protocols and procedures against national ‘best practices’,” says Bithell-Taylor. “Our goal is to keep all our employees healthy and productive, giving them one more reason to be proud to work in the BIDMC community.”
