On Thurs., May 11, as the Boston Red Sox were beating the Yankees in New York, more than 250 members of the BIDMC community were cheering behind home plate at Fenway Park. Although most were Sox fans, they were’t cheering this time for the Olde Towne Team, but for nurses and aspiring nurses at BIDMC. In a festive culmination of the medical center’s National Nurses Week celebration, the annual Nursing Awards Ceremony took place at the EMC Club at Fenway Park and proved to be an inspirational and memorable evening for all. Numerous practice awards and more than $100,000 in nursing scholarships were handed out to nearly 50 honorees.

For Dianne Anderson, RN, BIDMC senior vice president of clinical operations, the awards marked her fifth anniversary at BIDMC. She used the opportunity to highlight the “lifetime of changes” that have occurred on her watch, saying that BIDMC nurses provided the important constants of excellence and professionalism throughout. Anderson (left in photo, with event organizer Laurie Bloom, RN, education nurse specialist) was presented with a gift appropriate for the fifth year “wood” anniversary – a baseball bat signed by Red Sox great Carl Yastrzemski on his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Lois Silverman, RN, (right), chair of the BIDMC Board of Directors, gave an eloquent opening address in which she described “10 Points of Pride” for BIDMC nursing – accomplishments at BIDMC in the last year that included the launch of the triggers patient safety enhancement program, the opening of new units, progress in reducing central line infection rates, and high patient satisfaction scores. She shared three beliefs that helped direct her own successful career in nursing and business: all things are possible; we sometimes need help; and growth and success come from within.

Although the ballfield was empty, a winning spirit was evident at the ceremony. Celebrating our nurses at Fenway were (l-r) BIDMC’s Anderson; Paul Levy, president and CEO, who called nursing practice “the heart of our institution”; Michael Epstein, MD, executive vice president and COO; Marsha Maurer, RN, vice president, patient care services; and Patricia Folcarelli, RN, PhD, director of professional practice development.
