CareGroup Network Architecture and Support Services
Steps for Adding Infrastructure Equipment to the CareGroup
Network
1. Identify OrgUnit where device it to be placed and obtain an IP
number in the local schema
· If a VTP domain exists for the OrgUnit, then switch numbering must be
in vlan 1 of the OrgUnit's VTP domain. If this is for a new remote site,
first follow steps for creating a new site range then continue from here.
· Router should be numbered with +1 offset from IpRange start
· Switch if collocated with router should be numbered with +2 offset,
otherwise with next assigned IP number within OrgUnit's vlan 1.
2. Create a DNS name for the equipment and register it.
· Routers should be named link-sitename
· Switches should be named switch-sitename
· Switches within BID use switch-closetname&number
· Multiple switches in other OrgUnits should be named 'switch-' with the
three letter site abbreviation and a mnemonic location identifier (e.g.
switch-glolab, switch-gloemer or switch-walmob) involving the department,
building or closet numbering system used locally.
· Multiples switches in doctors' offices should be named switch-office1,
switch-office2 etc.
· Either process the DNS registration by hand or use http://nsg.caregroup.org/dns-request
3. Check that CareGroup production operating system versions are installed
and running from flash. Upgrade if necessary from CNAS TFTP server.
· 5505/9s should have 4.5.8; 3500s should have 12.0.5XU; 2900s should
have 12.0.5.2XU
· 2500s should have 11.2.18P; 1720s should have 12.0.3T3
4. Configure the unit using the IP number and DNS host name
· Use CareGroup Specific DNS server, ntp server, routing modifications,
and security specifications
· Use Site Specific domain information, access and enable passwords, SNMP
RO/RW strings, default gateway and OSPF information
· Add in Protocol Specific items as needed by clients at site: Meditech,
LAT, IPX, Appletalk, DHCP.
· Make sure all router serial interfaces and subinterfaces are in 'no
shutdown' state
· Make sure switch interfaces or trunks are set for vlan 1 as default
· Print out two copies of the hardware config
· Telnet to TFTP server and touch file with hostname-confg to provide
for later TFTP config backups
5. Install the icon within Intermapper on the appropriate screen using
the DNS name and site-specific SNMP RO string.
· If equipment is not yet deployed to site, open-apple" the red icon and
put in a note with expected date of go live. Icon should turn blue when
finished. Rule-of-thumb: Don't leave an icon red overnight.
· Use the Attach Notification feature to assign the person to be contacted
when the device goes offline.
6. Email John Dvorak
with device information
· Include type/number, serial number, DNS name, passwords, IOS level info,
memory amount and location information of deployment. He will update the
master inventory spreadsheet.
7. Pack Equipment back into shipping box and hand equipment over to
site contact within CSIS for installation.
· Please give John Dvorak any manifest/shipping info attached to the shipping
box.
· Make sure power cable is in box for deployment
· Pack one copy of the hardware config printed out in step four to provide
for easier problem resolution on site. Give other copy to CNAS person
who will be the contact for the site go-live.
· Do not repack documentation, console connecting cables or mounting brackets:
put these in CNAS cupboard within work area.
8. After device is online at site:
· Check that Intermapper icon turns green and snmp polling shows routes
· Telnet to device, check log entries for possible discrepancies. Check
router's IP routes for correct weight; check and set switch port vlans
as needed once local VTP has populated
· TFTP the config up to CareGroup TFTP server using hostname-confg as
file entry
· Enter into Cisco Resource Manager info on device. Use the site specific
passwords and SNMP RO,RW strings.
· Enter into VitalAnalysis the router IP and SNMP RO, then probe and add
resources. Do not enter switches into VitalAnalysis.
