Reference Laboratory Testing
The BIDMC Core Clinical Services Committee (CCSC) has approved
this list of reference labs on 1/27/2009. Specimens can ONLY
be sent to these labs unless you contact the lab in advance so we can solicit
and receive that reference labs accreditation information.
We can add labs to this list, but the lab must be CLIA certified. New
reference labs can be used only with Pathology medical director approval
and a copy of the labs CLIA license has been received. If you would like
to request that we add a lab, please contact Dr. Lynne Uhl by email or at
617-667-3648.
CLIA certification of ALL reference labs is a requirement for our CAP
accreditation and we risk a deficiency by using non-certified labs. In addition,
compliance dictates that, if a provider orders a test, then we must report
the results and we must bill for the testing. This list of reference labs
is reviewed and approved annually by the CCSC. We obtain copies of these
labs' CLIA certificates. The vast majority of our reference work is done
by Quest Diagnostics, our primary vendor.
Some tests require special handling and processing. It is the responsibility
of the ordering provider to ensure that the appropriate specimen is obtained.
Many labs do not accept specimens on weekends or holidays. Customer Service
will be able to advise you on these issues (617-667-LABS).
Specimens are generally sent out during regular business hours except
for STAT drug requests which are processed and reported around the clock.
Results of routine tests performed at reference labs are generally available
in the computer within several days. The lab manual details the expected
turn-around time for the most commonly ordered send-out tests.
