• Use standard (universal) precautions when obtaining any clinical specimen.
• Follow the proper procedures for labeling the specimen. Our Specimen Labeling Policy describes the protocol and policy for labeling specimens.
• Place specimen in clean plastic bags for transport to the Laboratory.  Use red stat bag if specimen is ordered stat.
• Fill out the appropriate requisition (including the name of the physician who ordered the test) and attach it to the outside of the plastic bag.
• Deliver specimens as quickly as possible to the laboratory to avoid specimen degradation.
