GUIDELINES FOR CULTURE OF EYE
SPECIMENS
- For conjunctivitis, use
the swab
provided with the appropriate transport system. For bacteriology, this
would
be the aerobic transport medium. For Chlamydia, this would be the M4
transport medium.
- For corneal infections, an
ophthalmologist should scrape multiple areas of ulceration with a
kimura spatula or a #15 scalpel blade with the aid of a slit lamp or
operating microscope per protocol.
- Eye culture media is
available
for pickup in the Microbiology Lab (Rabb 350, 617-667-2306). Please
call
30 min. ahead to arrange for appropriate media.
- Aspirated intraocular
fluid should
be put into an anaerobic transport tube and delivered immediately to
the
laboratory.
- Viral and chlamydia
cultures must
be received in appropriate transport media and ON ICE.
- Special requests, such as
r/o
Acanthamoeba need to be discussed with the laboratory BEFORE
they
are ordered.
