Obtain a SWUBE paddle from the
laboratory (617-667-5227 or 617-667-2307).
Put a patient specimen label on
the tube and complete a requisition form so that the patient can bring
the specimen and requisition directly to the laboratory after the
specimen has been collected.
Instructions for the patient
Collect the sample several hours
after the patient has gone to bed (between 9 pm and midnight) or
IMMEDIATELY after they rise out of bed in the morning
and before they bathe or have a bowel movement. This is because the
female pinworm migrates to lay eggs when we rest.
Hold the paddle by the cap and
remove it from the tube.
Separate the buttocks and press
the tacky surface of the slide against several areas of the perianal
region (the area around the anus).
Replace the paddle in the tube.
Refrigerate the sample if you
cannot bring it to the lab within 24 hours.
